Projects (Segment-Based Comparison)

Projects enable users to quickly compare multiple segments of data in a single, structured view.

Updated this week

Overview

When analyzing datasets, users often need to compare key segments such as demographics, time periods, or custom Boolean groups. Projects support this by allowing users to build up to 10 segments as rows, each with its own filters across one or more datasets. Users can view these segments simultaneously using consistent metrics, making comparisons clear, structured, and actionable.

Key Benefits:

  • Speeds up analysis by eliminating the need to toggle between filters

  • Improves clarity with structured, side-by-side comparisons

  • Reduces manual work by removing the need for spreadsheet exports

  • Supports flexible segmentation using question, wave/date, and Boolean filters

  • Enables in-platform analysis for faster insights

Create and Manage Projects

Open Project Manager

From the main dashboard, switch the toggle in the upper-left corner from Datasets to Projects.

In the Project Manager, users can view a list of existing Projects, including:

  • Number of datasets

  • Number of segments

  • Tags

  • Creation date

Users can also:

  • Filter or search Projects by dataset, creator, tags, or keywords

  • Pin important Projects for quick access

  • Delete Projects

  • Duplicate Projects

  • Create Projects

Creating a New Project

Click Create Project in the upper-right corner, then choose one of the following options:

  • Single-Dataset Project

    • Compare up to 10 segments within a single dataset

  • Multi-Dataset Project

    • Compare up to 10 segments across multiple datasets

** Note: Project type cannot be changed after creation.

Single-Dataset Project Workflow

Use a Single-Dataset Project when comparing segments within the same dataset. This is ideal for analyzing differences across demographics, time periods, or Boolean groups within a single source of data.

1. Select a Dataset

  • Only one dataset can be selected; all other datasets will be greyed out after selection

2. Build Segments

Each row represents a segment.

  • Apply filters:

    • Question picker

    • Wave/date range

    • Boolean search

  • Add additional segments using the Create Segment button

  • Duplicate segments via the three-dot menu on the right of each segment to reuse filters

Note: Up to 10 segments can be added per Project

3. Organize Segments

  • Drag and reorder rows

  • Rename segments by double-clicking the segment name

  • Pin important segments to the top via the three-dot menu

  • Remove segments via the three-dot menu

4. Adjust Metrics and Settings

  • Add or remove general metrics (up to two selections):

    • Total Volume

    • Emotional Reactions

    • Emotion Rate

    • Topical Verbatims

    • Coded Verbatims

  • Select which metrics to compare across segments (Emotions, Topics, Summary)

  • Select emotion framework (Canvs, Ekman, Plutchik)

  • Set Project visibility:

    • Private: Only visible to you (Default)

    • Organization: Visible to others in your organization

  • Show comparison averages

  • Toggle volume vs. %

Note: By default, Projects display Volume and top aggregate codes as the selected metrics.

5. Analyze Results

  • Compare segments in a shared table:

    • Rows = segments

    • Columns = metrics

  • Expand rows via View More in the three-dot menu to view Ranker and verbatims

  • Open full segments in a new tab with filters applied via the three-dot menu

6. Save Project

  • Click Save Project to save a new Project

  • Add name, description, and tags

  • Click Apply to save changes to an existing Project

  • Click Discard to revert changes

Multi-Dataset Project Workflow

Use a Multi-Dataset Project when comparing segments across different datasets. This is useful for benchmarking across studies or comparing results from multiple data sources.

1. Select Datasets

  • Up to 10 datasets can be selected; all other datasets will be greyed out after selection

2. Build Segments

Each row represents a segment tied to a selected dataset.

  • Apply filters:

    • Question picker

    • Wave/date range

    • Boolean search

  • Add additional datasets using the Add Datasets button

  • Duplicate segments via the three-dot menu on the right of each segment to reuse filters

Note: Up to 10 segments can be added per Project, regardless of the number of datasets included.

3. Organize Segments

  • Drag and reorder rows

  • Rename segments by double-clicking the segment name

  • Pin important segments to the top via the three-dot menu on the right of each segment

  • Remove segments via the three-dot menu on the right of each segment

4. Adjust Metrics and Settings

  • Add or remove general metrics (up to two selections):

    • Total Volume

    • Emotional Reactions

    • Emotion Rate

    • Topical Verbatims

    • Coded Verbatims

  • Select which metrics to compare across segments (Emotions, Topics, Summary)

  • Select emotion framework (Canvs, Ekman, Plutchik)

  • Set Project visibility:

    • Private: Only visible to you (Default)

    • Organization: Visible to others in your organization

  • Show comparison averages

  • Toggle volume vs. %

Note: By default, Projects display Volume and top aggregate codes as the selected metrics.

5. Analyze Results

  • Compare segments in a shared table:

    • Rows = segments

    • Columns = metrics

  • Expand rows via View More in the three-dot menu to view Ranker and verbatims

  • Open full segments in a new tab with filters applied via the three-dot menu

6. Save Project

  • Click Save Project to save a new Project

  • Add name, description, and tags

  • Click Apply to save changes to an existing Project

  • Click Discard to revert changes

Additional Actions and Behaviors

  • Projects can be created directly from a dataset’s Content Page via the three-dot menu

    • This creates a new single-dataset project only

    • Users cannot create multi-dataset Projects or add to existing Projects from this flow

  • Users can view which Projects a dataset belongs to from a dataset’s Content Page via the three-dot menu

    • This option is disabled if the dataset is not included in any Projects

  • If a dataset used in a Project is modified in a way that affects the data (e.g., deleting or renaming codes, adding new data), a notification banner will appear. Affected segments will also be highlighted to indicate that the underlying data has changed.
