File Types

Updated this week

When uploading data into Canvs, the first step is choosing the right file type, an important selection that ensures data is processed accurately and interpreted in the correct context. This article walks through how file type selection works in the uploader, explains what each file type means, and provides guidance on choosing the best fit.

Overview

During the import workflow, Canvs prompts users to specify a file type that reflects the structure and source of their project. This choice guides how the platform analyzes the data and applies contextual Nets and Codes.

File Types and When to Use Them

Below are examples of various File Types of datasets that can be ingested in the Canvs platform and when to use each Type.

Best Practices

  • Use the Business Context and AI Customization fields to clarify study intent.

  • Use Transcript only for interview or group discussion transcripts.

  • Be consistent with file type selection across studies to enable more accurate comparison and trend analysis.

Limitations

  • Only one file type can be selected per file.

  • If Transcript is selected, the file type is locked and cannot be changed after upload.

  • If the wrong file type is chosen, a user must re-upload the file.
